The Stanton College Preparatory School Blue Devils varsity girls basketball team dominated the Englewood High School Rams, winning 40-17 at home Thursday night.
“We took control of the ball. We passed and swung the ball well and got shots up," said freshman guard Kaia Lipat.
The scoring barrage began in the opening minutes with sophomore forward Gabriela Lonsdale and freshman guard Charlee Evoniuk, and never ceased. By the end of the first quarter, Stanton had built a 13-point lead thanks in part to a buzzer-beater three-pointer to end the quarter from senior guard Skylar Wikdrick.
"That was definitely the best first half we've had since I've been at Stanton," said Stanton head Coach Jason Lonsdale.
Led by its bigs, a much improved Blue Devil defense remained solid throughout the first half. The Blue Devils passed well and outrebounded the Rams, who managed only three first half baskets. Evionuk added another buzzer-beater three as the second quarter expired to put Stanton up 28-6 at the half.
"We were very fluid running the plays and it helped us score a lot and get ahead," said senior guard Alexandra Roche.
Stanton was on cruise control in the second half. In the fourth quarter, Coach Lonsdale made his team pass five times before each shot, and he experimented by bringing in various players off the bench.
"They've worked really hard in practice. I'm really proud of them," said Coach Lonsdale.
Stanton had won its previous three games by a combined four points. With the blowout win, Stanton improves its record to 4-2, while Englewood falls to 0-6. The Blue Devils' next game will be at Mandarin on Dec. 10.
