The Stanton College Preparatory School Blue Devils varsity girls soccer team fell to Creekside High School Knights at home on Tuesday night by a score of 1-0.

“The result tonight was disappointing, but hopefully we will learn from the adversity,” said head Coach Brian Heggood.

The Knights struck early when a Creekside shot bounced off the crossbar and into the back of the net in the fourth minute. Creekside had the upper hand in the opening minutes, applying pressure and keeping senior defensive backs Hannah Fischer and Camille Prosswimmer busy. By the time the first half was over, senior goalkeeper Leslie Lerch had registered seven saves.

“We started out slow and we got mad at ourselves for how we played in the first half, and it motivated us to play harder, faster, and stronger,” said Prosswimmer.

After struggling in the early going, the Blue Devils offense found its footing in the final minutes of the first half. Led by senior strikers Leena Vashi and Imani Ashman and senior midfielder Abi O'Brien, Stanton created a number of scoring opportunities, although it failed to turn them into a goal.

“In the end we just got unlucky,” said junior midfielder Olivia Savelson.

Down a goal going into the second half, the Blue Devils frantically tried to tie the game. The nerve wracking first few minutes of the second half included two separate mad scrambles inside the six-yard box in which Stanton nearly scored.

"We started hustling more and we started making smarter runs," said Prosswimmer.

As the game wore on, the clock became the Blue Devil's biggest enemy, as the Knights  did everything they could to stall. In the end, Stanton was unable to come up with an equalizing score, and Creekside's early goal proved to be the deciding factor.

With the loss, Stanton’s record has dropped to 6-2, while Creekside improves to 5-2. Coach Heggood says the team is looking forward to their next match, a home game on Dec. 13 against undefeated Montverde Academy, ranked first in the country by MaxPreps.
