The Stanton College Preparatory School Varsity Volleyball team won out against Samuel W. Wolfson High School at Wednesday’s game in three sets full of intense rallies, bringing their record to 11 wins and only three losses.
The score was tied for most of the first set, with Wolfson and Stanton making alternating points. In the end, the combined power of senior setter Alaina Castengera’s ten assists and senior Caroline Rinaman’s four aces and five kills defeated the Wolfpack with a score of 25-22.
In the second set, Stanton consistently trailed their opponent, going into the first timeout of the set with a score of 2-7. After straying a few points behind for much of the set, they ended up bringing the score to a tie of 23-23, and after an ace by Castengera, it was up to her to make the match point. She was able to serve the winning ace, which meant Stanton could close out Wolfson by winning the third set.
The third set began steadily, with the score tied at 7-7. Stanton then secured a uniform lead, continually ahead until it was time for the match point. The score was 24-14 as the crowd waited for the Devils to score the game-winning point, but Wolfson then made 5 consecutive ones, provoking fear that Wolfson would make a comeback. Despite this fear and pressure, Stanton won the third set with a score of 25-19, securing their overall win.
Junior Danielle Gammon was a stand-out hitter, totaling 11 kills throughout the game. Rinaman totaled 12 kills and six aces during the three sets, and Castengera had a whopping 29 assists as the team’s primary setter. Sophomore Nina Bordinca, with a total of five aces and four kills, also greatly helped their victory.
Wolfson will go on to play an away game at Andrew Jackson High School on Monday, while Stanton’s Lady Blue Devils will play Englewood High School at Englewood on Tuesday.
