The Stanton College Preparatory School Blue Devils Varsity Volleyball team soundly defeated the Paxon School for Advanced Studies Golden Eagles 3-0 on senior night Tuesday.

“Senior night is always electric, a lot of energy for seniors, and that’s what geared us to victory,” said Stanton head coach Tangela Ennis.

That energy was apparent in the first set. Led by senior Victoria Rinaman’s serves and sophomore setter Justice Lofton, Stanton jumped out to an early 8-1 lead and never looked back. The Blue Devils ended the set with 12 straight scores, capped off by a Caroline Rinaman ace on the set point.

“We did well serving and getting Paxon out of their system,” said Coach Ennis.

Stanton’s seniors led the Blue Devil offense all night. Senior captain and outside hitter Kyliegh Castengera and the Rinaman sisters recorded a number of solid hits up front, and Stanton’s passing and setting were efficient.

Stanton was in control much of the night, but if there was ever a moment Paxon could have rallied it was midway through the second set. The Golden Eagles built a commanding 19-10 lead on the back of a 10-1 scoring run. The Blue Devils responded with an impressive, methodical 15-1 run of their own, winning the second set 25-20.

“We were down the second set, but rebounded because we found our energy and played our game,” said Victoria Rinaman. “It was a rough patch, but we worked hard to get out of it and ended up winning the set.”

Stanton’s comeback in the second set seemed to demoralize an already struggling Paxon team, which quickly fell behind in the third set. With senior Leah Christie serving, the Blue Devils coasted to a 25-13 victory in set three and a clean 3-0 senior night sweep.

Senior night is a special moment to recognize the seniors who are on the volleyball team, and this year it was extra special because it was against Paxon,” said Victoria Rinaman.

Paxon falls to 5-8 on the season, while 8-7 Stanton travels to Atlantic Coast High School to wrap up the regular season Thursday night.
