The Stanton College Preparatory School Blue Devils boys basketball team was defeated by the Ponte Vedra High School Sharks at home Tuesday night, opening the regular season with a 58-30 loss.
Ponte Vedra got out to a fast start, scoring the first 11 points of the game. The Blue Devil offense struggled, putting up just three first quarter points, and Stanton found itself down 12 going into the second.
The Sharks significantly outrebounded the Blue Devils, allowing Ponte Vedra to average multiple shots per possession. By the five-minute mark of the second quarter, the Sharks had extended their lead to 21-3.
Stanton gained some momentum on a Ro Vemuri three that kicked off a 13-3 Blue Devil run. The senior guard led Stanton with 15 points, including eight in the second quarter, helping the Blue Devils cut the deficit to single digits late in the first half.
The third quarter played out much like the first, with the Sharks opening the second half with a 13-2 run. Ponte Vedra turned several Stanton turnovers into fast break points at the other end of the floor.
The third quarter proved to be decisive, as the Stanton deficit grew from 11 to 24 points. The fourth quarter featured a barrage of Ponte Vedra threes, as the Sharks cruised to a 28-point victory.
The Sharks are 1-0, while the 0-1 Blue Devils look to bounce back next Tuesday, Dec. 1., when they play Englewood High School at home.
