The Stanton College Preparatory School Blue Devils varsity football team remained winless Friday night with a 22-0 home loss to the Englewood High School Rams.

Playing conditions were subpar, as several days of rain created a muddy field and poor footing. The conditions hampered both offenses and contributed to an ugly, penalty-filled game.

The Rams scored the first quarter’s only points on the game's opening drive. Englewood got a fourth down conversion and drew Stanton offside with a hard count on another fourth down. Englewoood’s  junior running back Rashaud Clark eventually punched in a short rushing touchdown, and sophomore quarterback Sean Wilks added a quarterback keeper two-point conversion.

The Blue Devil offense repeatedly stalled out in spite of a number of good, hard runs by senior running back Xavier Holden. Stanton’s Wing T offense kept getting behind the chains and finding themselves in third-and-long situations, and the Blue Devils struggled to pick up first downs.

The Blue Devil defense held its own for most of the night. Stanton got a big fourth down stop midway through the second quarter deep in its own territory, but it failed to swing the momentum, as the offense went three and out. Englewood’s Rashaud Clark ran a punt return 75 yards back for a touchdown, only to have the play called back by an illegal block in the back. In the play of the night for the Blue Devils, senior Stanton defensive tackle Jerry Cox picked off an Englewood pass at the Stanton 25.

The score remained 8-0 until the half’s final drive. After getting the ball back inside the Stanton 45 with 35 seconds remaining in the half, Rams quarterback Terrence Ford connected with Rashaud Clark twice, bringing the Rams inside the five. Sophomore Rams wide receiver Micheal Comer ran in a two-yard rushing touchdown as the clock hit triple zeros. On the ensuing two-point conversion, Ford lobbed a well-placed pass to the corner of the end zone, where a well-guarded Koron Hayward hauled it in, putting the Rams up 16-0 at the break.

The second half was largely uneventful, with neither team able to do much on offense. Early in the fourth, Rams’ quarterback Sean Wilks scored his second rushing touchdown of the night and the lone six points of the second half. A high snap resulted in a failed two-point conversion, but up 22-0, the Englewood was not the side in need of points.

Englewood moves on to face Matanzas High School next week after improving to 2-4. Stanton will face Joshua Christian Academy in search of its first win on Oct. 30.
