By the east and west wings, colorful art pieces hang by the stairwell. They embody the rigorous practice and technical skills honed by students in their art classes. Of Stanton College Preparatory School’s many creative communities, art stands out the most for its expressiveness and ability to instantly connect to its audience. Stanton’s art students are a large part of the art community, dedicating themselves to learning the intricacies of the craft.
Art students can choose a class that best suits them, like taking Art 1 to focus on traditional art or Digital Art Imaging to use more digital programs. These classes teach their students foundation skills such as perspective and anatomy, revealing art’s possibilities. Younger artists with less experience can end up with creative crutches that hamper their development, negatively impacting their art. By building the tools they need for success, art classes at Stanton can teach them how to create meaningful artwork. While the practice assignments are sometimes begrudged, they can pay off immensely, as shown by the artwork of students in Stanton’s hallways.
Independent artists also make up a large chunk of the art community at Stanton. These artists create pieces that tap into their inner world of ideas. The thoughts and emotions that fuel their pieces connect them to the wider creative community around them. Independent artists illustrate the ideas that are most meaningful to them and hold them in their art.
All artists use their experiences to inform the art they create; they draw from the fundamental studies they undergo in arts courses and personal experiences that fuel their work. Art students build the skills of perspective and value in their art classes. Independent artists funnel their personal interests or idols into their creations. Technical skill and creativity must come together to create meaningful art pieces. These resources from the community around students develop their art beyond what they could do alone.
From the art classes to the art-centric clubs around school, Stanton has grown its own community of artists inside and outside of class. In these spaces, artists can explore new skills and ideas in their work that may not have come to light before. Student art is a medium for the ideas and experience of an entire body of people. Despite the different backgrounds and methodology of each artist, the work they create contributes to the life of the wider Stanton community in a powerful way by invigorating the wider community, one canvas at a time.
