Q & A: Class of 2023: Ryan Sevilla

Devil’s Advocate: Briefly describe yourself as a person.

Ryan Sevilla: I am a pretty all around guy. I love to socialize a lot, I love to talk a lot,my friends will definitely tell you that. But I’m also really open to people’s ideas and my favorite thing about being at a school like this is being able to create good memories that will last me a lifetime, and  hopefully as freshman president I will be able to make that for everybody.

D.A.: Describe your background before Stanton.

R.S.: I am from St. Matthews, it is a private Catholic school. I unfortunately have not had any experience being in a public school but these first three weeks I feel I have gotten the hang of it. There’s a lot of good people here, I think I can hopefully channel all that creative energy and make it better.

D.A.: What prior leadership experience do you have?

R.S.: At my school, the 8th graders had to do a bunch of volunteer stuff, we did set up stuff like bazaars, things for the lower grades, things like that. I was also a leader at my vacation bible school, and there are also a lot of other things like karate that I have done that I have been a leader in.

D.A.: Why are uniquely qualified?

R.S.: Since I am from a private school, I have ideas that do not apply to a public school that I can somehow convert here. Also, I am a really all around guy, and I am pretty approachable, so if you want to ask me about anything about the school, I am open to it.

D.A.: Why do you want to be president?

R.S.: I want to be president because I ran last year, I got pretty close, but I did not make it all the way. But I feel like being a leader I can listen to the average freshman, I can listen to ideas that I might not have thought of, and put them into action by talking to the rest of freshman SGA.

D.A.: What problems do you want to address?

R.S.: A lot of the big feeder schools, like Darnell and Landon, those kids, it’s good that they stick together, but a lot of times they do not get to branch out to other friends. I see a lot of people that are lonely a lot. I want to have events where people can talk to freshmen from other schools. Also, a huge problem is the traffic with the students in the hallways.

D.A.: How would you mitigate traffic?

R.S.: It is ambitious, but we could reduce the time seniors have, because they know the school in and out, so they could have three minutes. Then we could release the Juniors, and juniors have four minutes. Then the Sophomores and freshmen could have five minutes. We could release them all a minute apart.

D.A.: What do you want to do as president?

R.S.: As freshmen, we’re obviously not the best at being here and surviving. I am going to try to reduce freshman stress by having activities like a four square tournament, and advocating for tutoring so students who are struggling in a certain class can get the help they need.

D.A.: What is your plan for pep rallies?

R.S.: For pep rallies we have to be really loud and think of something creative. At bridge we got really loud, and that was only one half of the freshmen, so together we can rock the gym.

D.A.: What do you like to do outside of school?

R.S.: I play some sports, I like to talk to my friends. I have a few hobbies, like a card game, and I usually like to use my computer and explore the web, stuff like that.

D.A.: Why should the Devil’s Advocate endorse you?

R.S.: I am a very ambitious and organized person, so I if they vote for me, I’ll make sure that Stanton freshmen have a good time, and get a better education, relieve stress, and have an all around better time at Stanton.
